CHANGCHUN, Sept. 2 (ChinaMil) -- General Ma Xiaotian, member of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC) and commander of the PLA Air Force (PLAAF), met with over 1100 first-year pilot students at the PLA Air Force Aviation University in Changchun, capital city of northeast China's Jilin Province on Thursday. Ma encouraged the freshmen to realize their ambitions in the air force.

Ma Xiaotian recalled the history of development of the PLAAF, which started from scratch in the northeast China in late 1940s and grew up in the battlefields of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea in early 1950s.

In the past decades, the PLAAF has kept development in accomplishing its mission of safeguarding China's territorial air and now entered the transition period, Ma said. Building a powerful air force which combines air and space strengths and possesses offensive and defensive capabilities is the target set by the PLAAF for its transitional development, Ma added.

The PLAAF Commander encouraged the pilot students to study hard and train hard and become talents capable of serving the country, the PLA and its air force.

An award ceremony was also held in Changchun on the same day. Ma Xiaotian and PLAAF Political Commissar Yu Zhongfu presented awards to 100 high schools which are commissioned by the PLAAF to provide candidates of pilot students.
