Chinese frigate escorts WFP vessel in Gulf of Aden

(ChinaMil) -- After about 20 hours of continuous navigation, ELENI K, a vessel of the World Food Program (WFP), arrived at the sea area off the Berbera Port, Somalia safely on Oct 6, local time, under the escort of guided-missile frigate Handan of the 24th Chinese naval escort taskforce.

The Chinese naval escort taskforce have provided escort for the WFP vessels for nine times since the Chinese navy sent its ships to join the multinational escort operations in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia in 2008.

The Panamanian freighter ELENI K, loaded with wheat and other assistance materials provided by the WFP to the African refugees, was destined for Berbera Port, Somalia by way of the sea area of Djibouti. The Chinese frigate Handan met the WFP freighter at the south entrance of the Mandeb Strait.

During the escort navigation, ship-based helicopters took from the Handan to carry out reconnaissance and alarming.

The Chinese frigate also kept information communication with escort forces in the surrounding waters to ensure timely discovery of and quick actions against any pirates activities.
