Chinese defense minister meets Russian counterpart in Beijing

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (ChinaMil) -- Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Chang Wanquan held talks with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in Beijing on Wednesday.

Gen. Chang commented that under the promotion of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the relations between the two countries are now in the best period in history.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation Between the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Russia strategic cooperative partnership, and on celebration of the two anniversaries, the two countries have worked together and witnessed further development of the bilateral relations and enhancement of comprehensive strategic cooperation, Gen. Chang said.

The two countries have also achieved fruitful results in military-to-military exchange and cooperation in areas of high-level exchange of visits, joint exercises and training, and military technologies, which helped enhance the strategic mutual trust and traditional friendship between the two sides, Gen. Chang continued.

The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the Russian side to implement the consensuses reached by the heads of state of the two countries, so as to push forward the military-to-military relations between the two countries to a new high, Chang said. He also briefed his Russian counterpart on relevant information about the Sixth Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Gen. Shoigu said that the important consensuses reached by the heads of state of the two countries have pointed out the direction for the development of the relations between the two countries and the two militaries.

The Russian military is willing to work with the Chinese military to constantly deepen the pragmatic cooperation in various fields and jointly maintain the regional and world peace and stability, Gen. Shoigu added.

Gen. Yi Xiaoguang, deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department under China’s Central Military Commission (CMC), attended the meeting.
