BEIJING, Dec. 13(ChinaMil) -- A middle school student recently came to me and wanted to talk about the military with me. He even recommended several articles that he thought were good.
But the titles of those articles made me speechless: This Technology Will Make China King of the Sea, US Will Suffer Major Casualties if Going to a War Against China, US Aegis No Longer No.1: Detailed Analysis of 052D, and China's New Weapon to Enter Space, Leave Russia Behind, and so on.
I won't elaborate on how far we are from being a strong military power in the world. I want to emphasize that these sensational titles make us worry what would happen if our young people really believed them?
A nation's military strength and war potential is fundamentally decided by its overall national strength and supported by a strong industrial system covering information, aerospace, energy, iron and steel, machinery making, materials and process.
In the military field alone, military theories, command system, weapon and equipment, intelligence reconnaissance and even individual soldier and unit's technical and tactical levels should be developed in parallel and be tested by real combat.
Today some Chinese people are talking as if China is already a strong military power. Many are so excited about such new equipment as the aircraft carrier, WZ-10 armed helicopter, J-20 fighter jet, Y-20 transport aircraft and Type 052D guided-missile destroyer that they believe those are enough to make China a military power.
Let's start with equipment. It is the dream of generations of Chinese people to have our own aircraft carrier, but let's not forget that the world's first aircraft carrier was created a century ago, and our first aircraft carrier is inferior to world advanced carriers not only in power, cruising ability and number of carrier-borne aircraft, but also in the study and training of technical and tactical approaches.
Let's not forget that our aircraft carrier Liaoning is just a ship for training. Instead of being content with ourselves, we should make ceaseless efforts to catch up with world advanced level.
It's the same with the J-20 fighter jet. Take a look at our auto industry. Home-made auto brands like Geely, BYD and Great Wall are still unable to make first-class cars like Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
It's not that our national brands don't work hard enough, but industrial development has its own laws and we cannot expect to catch up overnight with other brands that have developed for hundreds of years.
The same goes to the aerospace industry. Every time I walked into a plane manufactory, I saw touching slogans like "Requiting the Country by Contributing to Aerospace" and "Working for the Country for 40 Years in Good Health". The Chinese aerospace circle is clear-minded and it knows very well that we still have a long way to go despite our remarkable achievements.
Weapons and equipment have to be mass produced and equipped to troops to a certain amount before they can form combat capability. Take Y-20 transport aircraft for example. Experts calculated that for China to achieve the global delivery capacity that the US had in the middle and late stage of the last century, it needs at least 100 Y-20s, which means the annual production capacity of at least ten such aircraft given the 10-year cycle to guarantee normal replacement and use.
Now let's talk about our inferiority in other aspects. Take the US military for instance. Since the Gulf War, the US military has improved its joint combat command system every time it fought a war. We cannot say its system is the most advanced in the world, but I think we would all agree that its command system has been tested by real wars and is most suitable for its military features. Its command chain has also been tested by war and proven safe and reliable. Its efficiency and convenience in asymmetrical warfare is impressive.
Let's take a look at its intelligence support system. In addition to 65 percent of all reconnaissance satellites in the world, the US military has absolute dominance in the cyberspace and software and hardware technologies and can realize one-way transparency. Tens of countries and regions including Japan, ROK and Taiwan of China have intelligence sharing arrangements with it, and its GPS reaches the civilian precision of 0.3 meter.
The US military also has great training. Physical training is stressed for every soldier, every unit has tactical training, and their services have joint combat training. Its joint combat training is so advanced that different services are highly coordinated, which isn't something every military can do.
We are not here to extol the US military, but to warn ourselves not to get carried away.
Nowadays the "We Media" are filled with sensational articles and the readers are mostly young students. What kind of message and values do our students receive?
We don't need them to blockade McDonald's or smash Japanese cars. We need them to study science and knowledge, and contribute to our motherland by developing business, working for the aerospace or joining the military. Sensational articles won't cultivate such excellent youths who are patriotic, aspiring but also cool-minded.
Stay calm, make down-to-earth efforts and achieve our goal without fanfare. We will see a powerful and great China in the future, but today, it's no time to brag yet.
