BEIJING, Dec. 14(ChinaMil) --The White House reaffirmed on Monday that the US government remains firm commitment to the One-China policy, after reiterating "The US will stick to the One-China policy which it has committed to for forty years" twice on December 2 and 5 respectively.
The US government clearly knows that admitting that "the People's Republic of China is the only legal government of China" and "there is but one China, and Taiwan is part of China" is the political cornerstone for China-US relations and is also the policy that has been adhered to by successive American governments ever since the two countries established diplomatic ties.
Any word or deed that violates this principle is nothing short of playing with fire and will undermine the foundation of China-US relations. Without a solid foundation, the healthy and steady development of bilateral relations and cooperation in important areas between two countries will be out of the question.
The Taiwan issue has always been the center and also the most sensitive issue in China-US relations. The three joint communiqués issued by two countries before and after they forged diplomatic ties have all made a clear statement of the One-China principle which involves the Taiwan issue.
Since 1979, no American president, incumbent or elect, has ever made irresponsible remarks on the One-China principle. Even if every new administration in Washington has make it a habit to adopt a tough stance against China in the early stage, they has never crossed the bottom line of One-China principle.
Upholding the One-China policy and maintaining the peaceful development of cross-strait relations is not only favorable for the long-term development of China-US relations and beneficial for their people, but also can promote regional and world peace, stability and prosperity.
Both China and the US have the responsibility for controlling the general direction of bilateral relations, actively expanding pragmatic cooperation, and constructively managing sensitive issues. They should respect each other and think from each other's perspective in order to avoid misjudgment and prevent the escalation of conflicts.
Besides, some political tricks cannot change the international consensus on "One-China". "One-China" is the basic status of the current cross strait relation, which is clearly stated both in domestic and international laws.
Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation have both confirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan, and international organizations including the United Nations and most countries in the world admit that "there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China", and pledge to deal with their relations with Taiwan within the "One-China" framework.
Today "One-China" is an international consensus, as well as the basic principle on which most countries engage with China. German chancellor Merkel said on December 12 that Germany would adhere to the One-China policy.
2016 marks the 70th anniversary of China's recovery of South China Sea islands. History shows us that safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity is the core interest of all countries, and ensuring national integrity and safeguarding the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation is the common aspiration of all Chinese people and an irresistible historical trend. Any activity that intends to split China will be firmly opposed by all Chinese people.
Anyone or any power trying to undermine the One-China policy and damage China's core interests will only ends up with hurting themselves by their own doings.
