China, Australia hold 20th defense strategic dialogue in Canberra

CANBERRA, Aug. 29 (ChinaMil) -- The Chinese and Australian militaries held their 20th annual Defense Strategic Dialogue in Canberra on Monday.

Major Gen. Shao Yuanming, deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department under China's Central Military Commission, Deputy Secretary for Strategic Policy and Intelligence of the Australian Department of Defense Ms Rebecca Skinner, and Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force Vice Adm. Ray Griggs co-chaired the dialogue.

Two sides exchanged views on bilateral state and military relations, regional security, and other issues of common concern.

Shao noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a successful visit to Australia in 2014, and the two countries announced to establish comprehensive strategic partnership, opening a new chapter in their bilateral relations.

China would take the opportunity of the 45th anniversary of the China-Australia diplomatic relations to earnestly implement the important consensuses reached by leaders of the two countries, strengthen the pragmatic cooperation between the two militaries in areas of high-level exchange of visits, joint exercise and training, multilateral security and international anti-terrorism, in a bid to continuously enrich the contents of the China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership, Shao said.

Both Skinner and Griggs agreed that the defense cooperation constitutes an important part of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Australia and China, Australia hopes to make united efforts with China to maintain the sound momentum of development of bilateral military relations and strengthen the strategic communication between the two militaries, deepen pragmatic exchange and cooperation in military education and personnel training.

Shao Yuanming also met on Tuesday with Acting Secretary of Australian Department of Defense Brendan Sargeant, and they held candid exchange of views on commonly concerned topics.

Chinese Ambassador to Australia Cheng Jingye attended the above activities.

China and australia inaugurated the annual dialogue in 1997 and the 19th China-Australia Defense Strategic Dialogue was held in Bejing on October 12, 2016.
