WAU, South Sudan, Jan. 17 (ChinaMil) -- The 8th Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment to South Sudan (Wau) and the Bangladesh peacekeeping infantry battalion conducted a joint defense drill on Monday to enhance the capability of jointly dealing with emergencies.

In recent days, the security situation in South Sudan has been rather grim. The government troops and rebels have been in exchange of fire for days amid severely deteriorated social order and escalating tribal conflicts in the local community, causing hundreds of casualties and several vicious robberies.

The Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment and the Bangladesh peacekeeping infantry battalion conducted the joint defense drill in order to prepare for possible emergency situations and strengthen the capability of crisis response and control.

The background of the joint exercise is a construction site. In the drill, the Chinese peacekeepers rapidly formed combat formations under the cover of Bangladesh infantry fighting vehicles.

The 8th Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment arrived in the mission area last September. They are mainly responsible for the construction of roads, bridges, airports, barracks, bunkers, water supply and power supply facilities, as well as providing engineering support for the peacekeeping forces in the Sector West of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
