BEIJING, March 16 (ChinaMil) -- The US must continue to assist Taiwan’s self-defense and resist China’s use of any force to unify Taiwan with the mainland, said Admiral Harry Harris, head of US Pacific Command at a hearing of the US Senate Armed Services Committee on Mar. 15. Harris also advocated continuing regular arms sales to Taiwan.

The Japanese-American commander has been known for his strong confrontation against China in the East China Sea and the South China Sea. He believes that China has built a "Maritime Great Wall" in the South China Sea and tried to militarize the area.

At the hearing, Harris once again raised the issue of "arms sales to Taiwan." Many mainland netizens commented that "The US is going to sell dog food to Taiwan again." Some netizens doubted, "Does Harris have the final say in China's reunification?"

A netizen from Taiwan also posted in the comment section of the "Liberty Times" that "The US is still finding it impossible to cover up its essence as a paper tiger. This time, there is the 'Taiwan Travel Act' and people who support the Pan-Green Coalition have to open their eyes and look at their American daddy and see what the US will do."

On the issue of arms sales to Taiwan, the Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council has stated its position on many occasions. "The Taiwan issue is China's internal affair. We firmly oppose any country's arms sales to Taiwan or military cooperation with Taiwan. This position is well known. China resolutely opposes the US plan to sell arms to Taiwan. Any move attempting to undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait will face consequences," according to the Taiwan Affairs Office.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang also said at a press conference that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. By selling arms to Taiwan, the US has severely violated international law, basic norms governing international relations and three China-US joint communiqués, and jeopardized China's sovereignty and security interests, all of which China firmly opposes. China stresses that its government and people will never waver in their will and determination to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity and to fend off external interference.
