BEIJING, March 16 (ChinaMil) -- The Second Research Institute of China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation (CASIC) has successfully developed a miniature portable CPT (coherent population trapping) atomic clock. The clock, with a small size of about fifty-two cubic centimeters and power consumption of one watt, has a perfect accuracy of punctuality reachiing one microsecond per day.
The CPT atomic clock is currently the only atomic clock in China that can be miniaturized and work for a long time with battery power.
The portable CPT atomic clock has broad application prospects in areas of autonomous navigation terminal equipment, long distance precise timing and time synchronization, equipment measurement and control system, and underwater navigation network. Its successful development will be greatly conducive to enhancing China's national defense capabilities.
The portable CPT atomic clock is able to ensure precise navigation, positioning and timing functions for a certain period of time when satellite navigation signals are not available.
According to Yang Furen, a research fellow working in a key laboratory under the CASIC, the CASIC has started the low-rate initial production of the miniature portable CPT atomic clock.
