JERUSALEM, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Israel's army said on Sunday that it has uncovered a fourth "attack tunnel" crossing from southern Lebanon into Israeli territory.

The tunnel was discovered over the weekend amidst the "Northern Shield" operation, which aims to "locate and thwart" cross-border tunnels, a military spokesperson said in a statement.

"The attack tunnel is under IDF (Israel Defense Forces) control and does not pose an imminent threat," the statement added.

Israeli troops have placed explosive devices before destroying it. "Any entrance from the Lebanese side is dangerous," the spokesperson warned.

"The IDF is currently investigating and analyzing the attack tunnel while continuing to implement various operations as planned," the spokesperson added.

The army said it holds the Lebanese government accountable for the attack tunnels dug from Lebanese territory.

"This is another blatant breach of UN Resolution 1701 and Israeli sovereignty," according to the army.

Israel has accused the Iran-backed militia of Hezbollah of building tunnels running from southern Lebanon to northern Israel to attack the country.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in 2006 that ended in a cease-fire.
