PHNOM PENH: Cambodia and China on Wednesday began a 13-day joint military exercise in southern Cambodia involving more than 600 military personnel from both sides.

The Golden Dragon military exercise, held at Techo Sen Chumkiri military institute in Kampot province, aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries' armed forces in combating terrorism, maintaining stability and assisting in disaster relief.

The exercise involves 252 Chinese soldiers and 382 Cambodian soldiers as well as 2,200 other personnel including paramedics, according to Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesman Chhum Socheat.

It is the third such exercise held between China and Cambodia since the first in 2016.

The latest drill also involves helicopters, armored vehicles, tanks and artillery reinforcements, among other armaments.

China is the largest donor of military aid to Cambodia.
