NEW DELHI, July 2 (Xinhua) -- An Indian air force (IAF) fighter jet Tuesday dropped a spare fuel tank mid-air in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, officials said.

No loss of life or injury was reported in the incident.

The spare tank fell from Light Combat Aircraft Tejas in Coimbatore, about 506 km southwest of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

"This morning at around 8:40 a.m. (local time) one fuel drop tank fell off from a Tejas aircraft during a routine sortie from Sulur Air Base near Coimbatore," an official said. "The fuel tank fell into an empty farm."

Police said the tank caused a three-foot deep crater on the earth.

Reports said the locals were shocked to see the 1,200-liter petrol tank falling from the sky.

Following the incident, the aircraft landed back safely at Sulur air force station. It was not clear what caused the tank to fall. Authorities have ordered a probe into the incident.
