BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Zang Tiewei, a spokesperson for the Commission of Legislative Affairs of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, on Friday denounced the U.S. House of Representatives' passing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019.
"It reflects the United States' Cold-War mentality and its interference in China's internal affairs in the legal field, which we resolutely oppose," said the spokesperson at a press conference.
It also went against international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and was an attempt to disrupt the enforcement of the Constitution of the People's Republic of China and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in Hong Kong and damage the prosperity and stability of the region, according to Zang.
Hong Kong is an SAR of China, and Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs, which allow no interference from any country or organization, he noted.
"We urge the United States to stick to international law and the basic norms governing international relations, earnestly respect China's sovereignty and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs by any means," said Zang.
As for the situation in Hong Kong, he continued that the most urgent and important task is to end the violence and chaos and restore order, and that Hong Kong affairs must be dealt with in accordance with the Constitution, the Basic Law of the HKSAR and other relevant laws of Hong Kong.
Zang also stressed the need to take a step-by-step approach to develop a system of democracy that is conducive to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, and fits reality on the ground.
