BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The mainland believes Taiwan's New Party led by its new chairman, Wu Cheng-tien, will continue to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and advance the process toward the peaceful reunification of the motherland, a mainland spokesperson said Friday.

Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks as Wu took office Friday.

Zhu said the New Party has always firmly supported the one-China principle, opposed "Taiwan independence" and advocated the peaceful reunification across the Strait since its establishment.

The mainland will continue to maintain and strengthen communication with any parties, organizations and individuals in Taiwan that oppose "Taiwan independence" and advocate improving and developing cross-Strait relations, including the New Party, she said.

Zhu added that the mainland greatly appreciated the great efforts made by Yok Mu-ming, the former chairman of the New Party, in promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations during his tenure.
