WAU, South Sudan, Oct. 11 -- Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar, commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), awarded the collective commendation at the highest level for UNMISS forces to all the officers and soldiers of the 10th Chinese peacekeeping engineer contingent to South Sudan. Twelve Chinese officers and soldiers were also awarded the individual commendation.

Since its deployment to the mission area in September last year, the Chinese peacekeeping engineer contingent has repaired a total length of 486 kilometers of main supply line with high standards, built two bridges, maintained and upgraded two important airports, and completed more than 100 small-scale engineering assistance tasks.

In addition, the Chinese officers and soldiers also actively helped the local people to resolve daily difficulties. They donated cultural and sports supplies to the local primary school, solved water supply issues for local villagers, and assisted University of Northern Bahr El-Ghazal to overhaul the campus. Such actions of the Chinese officers and soldiers have won them wide praise from the local people.
