China resolutely opposes the United States developing any formal relations with China's Taiwan region, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Ma made the comment in response to the US Department of State recently issuing new guidelines to encourage interactions between the US government and the island.

Upholding the one-China principle and provisions of the three China-US joint communiques is a serious promise made by the US to China, he said.

We urge the US side to take concrete actions to honor its promise, refrain from sending the wrong message to Taiwan separatists, and take solid measures to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, he said, adding the attempt to lean on the US for secession perpetrated by the Democratic Progressive Party, the island's ruling party, is doomed to fail.
