UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A terrorist assault on the UN peacekeeping base in Ber, Mali in the Timbuktu region, on Friday caused significant damage, a UN spokeswoman said.

"The head of the peacekeeping mission, El-Ghassim Wane, condemned the attack, which demonstrates the ongoing threat posed by terrorist groups to peacekeepers and the communities we serve in Mali," said Eri Kaneko, associate spokeswoman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "A preliminary assessment indicates no casualties, thankfully."

The mission in Mali, known as MINUSMA, has the reputation of being one of the most dangerous in all of Africa. An annual report on peacekeeping mission casualties said MINUSMA was "the world's most dangerous, with 19 peacekeepers killed" in Mali in 2021.

In 2013, the UN Security Council established MINUSMA, one of the largest missions, with more than 17,000 troops, police, civilians and volunteers authorized to help stabilize the government, according to the secretary-general's annual report on the mission in June.
