Türkiye forces start mission for World Cup security in Qatar

ANKARA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkish armed forces and a naval ship have started their mission for the security of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Turkish defense ministry said Sunday.

The MILGEM TCG Burgazada vessel, an Ada-class multi-purpose corvette, and teams of military personnel of explosives discovery and disposal, bomb search and anti-drone, and others have started to maintain the security of the international football competition, according to a ministry statement.

On Oct. 7, the Turkish parliament approved the deployment of Turkish troops in Qatar upon request from the Gulf Arab country.

In addition to Türkiye, the United States, France, Britain, Italy and Pakistan will also provide security assistance during the World Cup that will take place in Qatar from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18.

Ankara also decided to send 3,000 riot police, 100 special operations police, 50 bomb specialists, and 80 sniffer dogs and riot dogs to Qatar during the period.

Türkiye has established a military base in Qatar as the two countries have developed close ties in the past years.
